Payroll & P11D Processing
Outsourced Payroll & P11D Processing for UK Businesses - Accurate, Compliant & Tax-Efficient
Payroll is one of the most time-sensitive and compliance-critical functions in any business. A mistake in your payroll doesn’t just cause employee dissatisfaction, it can trigger HMRC penalties, damage your RTI (Real Time Information) compliance record, and create significant administrative headaches that are difficult and costly to unwind.
At Merit Accountants, we run payroll for businesses of all sizes, from single-director companies to firms with 100+ employees. Every payroll we process is checked for accuracy, filed on time via HMRC’s RTI system, and, crucially, reviewed against your wider tax strategy. Because our payroll team works alongside the Chartered Accountants and Tax Advisers, we consistently identify opportunities for tax-efficient pay structuring that most standalone payroll bureaus would never consider.
What Our Payroll Service Includes
Our fully managed payroll service covers: calculation and processing of gross to net pay for all employees; PAYE and National Insurance calculations in line with current HMRC rates; Real Time Information (RTI) submissions to HMRC on or before each pay date; auto-enrolment pension assessment, enrolment, and contribution processing; statutory payments including Statutory Sick Pay (SSP), Statutory Maternity Pay (SMP), Paternity Pay, and Shared Parental Leave; processing of attachment of earnings orders; payslip production (digital and/or printed); year-end P60 production and distribution; and monthly and annual payroll reports for your records.
P11D Processing & Benefits in Kind
If you provide any benefits or expenses to employees or directors, including company cars, private medical insurance, gym memberships, or interest-free loans, you are legally required to report these to HMRC on a P11D form by 6 July following the tax year-end. Class 1A National Insurance is then due on the taxable value of those benefits by 22 July.
Our P11D service covers identification of all reportable benefits across your business, accurate valuation of each benefit in accordance with HMRC rules, completion and submission of individual P11D forms, preparation and submission of the P11D(b) employer declaration, calculation of the Class 1A NIC liability, and advice on whether payrolling benefits (rather than using P11Ds) would simplify your reporting and improve employee understanding of their tax position.
Tax-Efficient Pay Structuring - The Merit Difference
This is where our payroll service separates itself from a standard payroll bureau. Because our payroll function sits within a firm led by a Chartered Tax Adviser, we review every client’s pay structure annually against their current personal tax position.
For director-shareholders, we advise on the optimal salary and dividend split each tax year, taking into account the current National Insurance thresholds, dividend allowances, personal allowance, and higher-rate tax bands. For businesses with multiple employees, we review whether salary sacrifice arrangements (for pensions, electric vehicles, or cycle-to-work schemes) could reduce both the employer’s NIC liability and employees’ income tax burden simultaneously.
These reviews are included in our payroll service at no additional charge. They consistently deliver measurable savings.
Salary Sacrifice & Benefits That Save Tax
Salary sacrifice is a formal arrangement where an employee agrees to give up part of their salary in exchange for a non-cash benefit. When structured correctly, both the employer and employee pay less tax and National Insurance. The most commonly used salary sacrifice arrangements include pension contributions, electric vehicle (EV) leasing through the Cycle to Work and EV salary sacrifice schemes, childcare vouchers for legacy arrangements, and enhanced employer pension contributions in lieu of pay rises.
We advise on and administer salary sacrifice arrangements for clients as part of our payroll service.
