Accountants in Tameside

If you run a business in Tameside, you probably have an accountant who files your accounts on time and tells you what you owe. The question worth asking is whether anybody is telling you what you could have paid instead. That is a different job, and it needs different training.

Merit Accountants has an office at Phoenix House on Huddersfield Road in Stalybridge, and we act for businesses right across the borough and well beyond it. We are Chartered Accountants and Chartered Tax Advisers, which means the person reviewing your numbers is qualified in tax as well as accounting. Our founder spent part of his career working inside HMRC. Our partners have built their own businesses from nothing to over £1m in turnover. We know what it costs to make payroll in a slow month, because we have done it.

Accountants for Every Sector

Which Tameside towns do we cover?

All of them, plus Glossop just over the Derbyshire border. Click through for details of how we work with businesses in each town.

What do Tameside businesses actually need from an accountant?

Tameside has roughly 230,000 people and a business base built on trades, engineering, logistics, retail and a growing number of professional services and online sellers. That mix produces a few recurring problems, and they are not the ones a standard compliance service is set up to solve.

You are a limited company paying more corporation tax than you need to

Corporation tax between £50,000 and £250,000 of profit is charged at an effective marginal rate of 26.5%. Most owner managed companies in that band have never had anybody sit down and model the profit extraction properly. Getting the salary and dividend split right, claiming the capital allowances you are entitled to, and timing a pension contribution before the year end are all ordinary planning, and together they routinely save four figures.

Example. A Tameside engineering company with £180,000 of profit is sitting in the marginal band. A £20,000 employer pension contribution made before the year end reduces the corporation tax bill by £5,300, and the money is still the director’s, just in a different place. Nobody needs to be clever for that. Somebody just needs to be looking.

You are in construction and CIS is eating your cash flow

Tameside has a lot of construction. If you are a subcontractor on 20% deductions and you have not applied for gross payment status, HMRC is holding money that could be funding your work in progress. If you are a contractor, your monthly returns and verification obligations carry penalties that start at £100 and climb quickly.

Your turnover is approaching the VAT threshold

Registration is compulsory once taxable turnover passes £90,000 in any rolling twelve months. The decision that matters is which scheme you go on to, because the wrong one costs real money every quarter for as long as you stay on it.

Making Tax Digital has just arrived and nobody has explained it

MTD for Income Tax became mandatory in April 2026 for qualifying income over £50,000. It drops to £30,000 in April 2027 and £20,000 in April 2028. If you are a sole trader or a landlord in Tameside, this will reach you, and quarterly reporting is not something to work out in the week before a deadline.

If none of these sound like your business, that changes nothing. They are the most common conversations we have in Tameside, not a list of who qualifies. The planning is the same whatever you sell.

What we do for Tameside clients

Why choose a Chartered Tax Adviser rather than just an accountant?

Anyone can call themselves an accountant. The Chartered Tax Adviser qualification is the highest tax qualification in the UK and it is held by a small minority of high street firms. The practical difference is what happens when your numbers are being prepared. A compliance focused firm records what happened. We look at what happened and ask whether it could have happened in a more tax efficient way, then tell you before the year closes rather than after.

In most cases the tax we save our clients exceeds the fee they pay us. That is the standard we hold ourselves to, and it is a reasonable thing to ask of any accountant you are paying.

Frequently asked questions about accountants in Tameside

Do you meet clients face to face in Tameside?

Yes. Our office is at Phoenix House, 2 Huddersfield Road, Stalybridge SK15 2QA, with parking on site. We are happy to meet at your premises anywhere in the borough, or on video if that suits you better.

How much do your services cost?

We quote a fixed monthly fee agreed in advance, so you know the number before you commit. What you pay depends on the size of the business and whether you need bookkeeping and payroll as well as year end work. Tell us what you need and we will give you a number, at no cost and with no obligation.

Do you only work with limited companies?

No. We act for sole traders, partnerships, landlords and higher rate individual taxpayers as well as limited companies. Directors of the companies we act for usually have their personal tax handled by us too, because the two are connected.

Can you take over part way through my financial year?

Yes, and it is common. We write to your current accountant for professional clearance and the handover paperwork is largely done for you. See our guide to changing accountants.

We are outside Tameside. Can you still act for us?

Yes. We also have offices in London and Potters Bar, and we act for clients across the North West, Yorkshire and nationwide. Being local is useful, but it is not a requirement.

How quickly can you take on a new client?

Usually within a week of the initial meeting, subject to standard anti money laundering checks and clearance from your previous accountant.

Do you handle HMRC investigations?

Yes, and this is a specialism. Our team includes someone who worked inside HMRC, which means we know how enquiries are opened, where inspectors focus and how to present a position so it holds up.

Which accounting software do you work with?

Xero, QuickBooks, Sage and FreeAgent. If you are on spreadsheets and Making Tax Digital is about to affect you, we will move you across and train your team.
