Richard Mahoney works with the founders of entrepreneurial and fast-growing businesses on financial plans that hold up as the business scales. He works on Merit’s CFO-level and business advisory work, drawing on eleven years of running his own accountancy practice.
Qualifications and Clarus Knight Accountants
Richard is a Fellow of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (FCCA). He founded Clarus Knight Accountants in 2014 and was its Managing Director for 11 years, until it merged with Merit Accountants in 2025. Having built and run a practice of his own, he advises business owners as someone who has made the same decisions on hiring, cash flow and growth that they are making now.
How Richard works with clients
Richard works on our fractional CFO and business advisory services, which are led by Hussein Bhaiji and Mukkarram Ali. For clients on the complete finance function, Richard adds forecasting and board-level reporting where a business needs CFO input. For businesses raising funding, he works with our finance raising team on the financial model and the business plan that investors or lenders will review.
His particular strength is helping founders scale: setting the financial plan, comparing it with actual results each month, and telling the owners when the numbers support pushing on and when they point to holding back. He does the same work outside Merit. As chairman of Camden Town Football Club, he is raising finance and securing commercial sponsorship for the club. It is the same work he does for clients, carried out for an organisation he runs himself.
The businesses he supports through our finance function range from around £250,000 turnover to more than £15m. What they have in common is that the owners need forecasts and board reporting they can take decisions on, not just year-end figures.
